Using Outlook via the internet HTTP protocol

So many times have you wanted to be able to download your email and disconnect from the phone line. In order to do this you must, configure your mail to work "offline". In the Outlook circles, this is called "Cached Exchange Mode."

About Cached Exchange Mode

This feature requires you to be using a Microsoft Exchange Server e-mail account in Cached Exchange Mode.

Cached Exchange Mode provides you with a better experience when you use a Microsoft Exchange Server e-mail account. A copy of your mailbox is stored on your computer. This copy provides quick access to your data and is frequently updated with the mail server.

If you work offline, whether by choice or due to a connection problem, your data is still available to you instantly wherever you are. If a connection from your computer to the computer running Exchange server isn't available, Outlook switches to Trying to connect or Disconnected. If the connection is restored, Microsoft Outlook automatically switches back to Connected or Connected (Headers). Any changes you make while a connection to the server isn't available are synchronized automatically when a connection is available. You can continue to work while changes are synchronized.

NOTE: You must complete the following steps while you are connected to campus via the VPN client.

Step 1: Connect to campus and log in via the VPN Client.

If you do not have the VPN client installed on your computer, you can download the program from UBit's web site .

Once installed, run the program and log in using your UBit username and password.

Once you have Outlook configured following these steps, you will NOT have to use the VPN client in order to use Outlook offline again.

Step 2: Configuring Outlook.

The first step is to configure Outlook by following these directions.

Check the box for Exhange settings

Step 3: Configure Outlook to connect using the HTTP protocol.

To configure Outlook to connect over the internet, launch Outlook and log into the server (VPN REQUIRED).

Once Outlook has started, click on the Tools menu and select Email Accounts. Make sure that the option to View or change existing e-mail account is selected and click NEXT.

Click on the Change button.

Click the More Settings button.

Under the Connection tab, place a check in the check box for Connect to my Exchange mailbox using HTTP.

Click the Exchange Proxy Settings button.

Step 4: Enter the URL for the proxy server for Exchange

Under the connection settings area, enter this information in the Use this URL to connect to my proxy server for Exchange:

ubitfe-cc1.cit.buffalo.edu

Click the OK button.

You will be prompted that Outlook will require a restart in order for the new configuration to apply. Once the restart of Outlook occurs, you will no longer be required to use the VPN client.

Please Note: When using Outlook in this manner, it is important to remember that when you send an email, you must syncronize your email folders in order for the email to appear in your alternate email locations (office, home, laptop, etc). If you fail to synchronize your folders by pressing the Send / Recieve button, the emails sent via the method described above will not appear in your other instances of Outlook.
